12 May FHC Youth Visit Indy Urban Acres
Today the Felege Hiywot Youth and Farm leaders visited the Indy Urban Acres to learn more about quality in farming.
“Indy Urban Acres, a project of the Indianapolis Parks Foundation, is a collection of four organic farms used to empower and educate people by providing equitable access to free, high quality produce. Since 2011, Indy Urban Acres has grown into a multi-disciplinary farm that works to inspire transformational change within Indy’s food system by providing food justness for low-income families, educating thousands of youth through tours and farm-to-plate workshops, providing community engagement to thousands of volunteers and groups, and teaching teens valuable job skills.” (indyparksfoundation.org/indy-urban-acres/)
The FHC youth participated in the soil health classes as well as helped plant marigold and tomato plants. The learning didn’t stop there! They also had a chance to learn quite a bit about cover crops and how to maintain healthy soil. Visiting Indy Urban Acres comes at the perfect time as we are also in the season of preparing the soil for crops at Felege Hiywot Center.
