19 May Becoming a Better Leader
Today the Felege Hiywot Center Youth had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2018 Indianapolis Youth Empowerment Summit put on by Teach for America Indianapolis hosted at Indianapolis University Purdue University Indianapolis. The purpose of the summit is to help students become leaders of tomorrow within their personal lives and community. This mission will be accomplished through:
- Creating a network of student leaders
- Teaching students about Indianapolis
- Helping students identify leadership skills and use them to create change within the community
The kids went through workshops to learn about their leadership styles. There were four interactive sessions: (1) Leadership, (2) Diversity, equity & inclusiveness, (3) Indy learning, (4) Creative exchange. The youth had a great time learning about their individual leadership style and participating in the discussions, and engaging with others. The youth were able to learn about areas of leadership that they didn’t previously know about such as working with the Criminal Justice Sector and connecting to the network of other upcoming leaders. One of the favorite discussions was how to combat gun violence and how to better engage the community through story telling.
