GA2G participated in Pike High School's cultural festival on 11-April-2008.
The youth started the preparation weeks prior to the event by gathering artifacts to display and by researching current events on Ethiopia. Their research had a unexpected result. It helped them to gain understanding and increased pride in their heritage, thus creating a desire to share this with others. It became the norm to hear them say, "Oh, wow! We did not know that. Cool!" They gathered so much information on their history, culture, education and geography, that it made it difficult for them to decide what to include in their display.
They identified which members would speak about the posters they created, which would serve Ethiopian food they had helped prepare, and which would scribe names in Amharic. Their booth was such a success at the festival that people were lined up to get a taste of food and get their names written in the Ethiopian native language, Amharic.
It was very exciting to see the outpouring of support from the audience when the group performed native dance and Ethiopian music on the stage. Their emotional and energetic performance engaged the crowd.
FHC staff were very proud of their accomplishments and their growth through this process.
